It’s a pretty common thing for the ladies to have to help our guys out. And, when it comes to engagement photos and selecting men’s outfits for them, it would seem we always have to do it! Most guys have a lot less enthusiasm when taking engagement photos. So below, I’m going to list out my best tips for helping the guys!

The Basics of Engagement Photos and Men’s Outfits

When I tell my couples to style for the engagement session, I usually suggest for them to choose at least one formal or classy dress outfit and one casual. They can bring up to 3, but I suggest 2 for time’s sake. We don’t want to spend all our time getting changed instead of taking photos. So, just the basics: I recommend that men dress up for their formal shots. They should always go with a suit and tie, the classier the better!

Classy is Best

First, tip; men look their best when they’re formally dressed. If they can go for it, definitely get them in a suit. Or, if a suit isn’t an option, a plain button up with a tie is always classic. It’s always something that stands out and a tie is a great way to put in that color for your engagement session. And, in a suit, solid shades of gray or navy will always compliment the woman’s dress. Additionally, it’s best for men to avoid crazy patterns – unless it’s in the tie. I usually suggest the guys avoid pinstripes or plaid because that’s distracting. Women’s dresses usually have the patterns to help the photos pop. The suit will not only dress the guy up, but also compliment the girls outfit. And for those guys who absolutely don’t want to wear slacks – sometimes nice jeans and a blazer, Suit coat or a vest on top of the shirt looks best.

Layers add dimension

Second tip; layering always looks nicer than not layering. And during winter, things like a mens sweater top over a button up will add extra dimension and visuals for photos. Blazers, vests, and coats will level up any look. I’m a big fan of this fresh take on a timeless classic, and I usually suggest that men should mix it up and add layers. If you want to pop some color in for your guy, they can use a neutral colored sweater with an eye catching color underneath. Adding layers will help creativity and the overall look of your engagement session.

Mix and Match

Lastly, I suggest that men mix things up (or have their ladies mix it up for them) when they wear a suit. Traditionally, during engagement photos, men’s outfits will usually consist of a suit and pants in the same color. But, I tell people not to be afraid to mix things up! For example, your guy could wear khaki slacks and maybe pair it with a blue blazer! The sky’s the limit here. Mixing colors into your engagement session adds visual interest to the photos. Men can mix it up and make it fun just like the ladies can.
